Expressionist Classic FX2020 Clunky but funky

Altec Lansing’s glossy Expressionist Classic FX2020 stereo speakers sound as good as they look.

ARE you looking for a pair of speakers that look as good as they sound? Then the Altec Lansing Expressionist Classic FX2020 may be right up your alley. These speakers are more for the user who is concerned with style and design.

HIDDEN: The volume controls are well-hidden and difficult to reach.

Conclusion

The Altec Lansing Expressionist Classic FX2020 takes up a wee bit too much desk space, uses unsightly thick wires and lacks a remote.

However, the sound quality is something to appreciate at a reasonable volume and the speakers do not look that bad.

Can’t give Altec Lansing flack for trying to be tasteful with the shiny design.

Pros: Easy setup; decent sound quality.

Cons: No remote; chunky design; lacks power.

The Logitech Pure-Fi Dream

Dream 4

The Logitech Pure-Fi Dream

The Logitech Pure-Fi Dream, a clock radio for the iPhone and iPod, has a nice mix of design and functionality.

There are plenty of ways that I’d like be woken up in the morning, and top on that list is to be (a)roused by a beautiful supermodel. However, since that’s not very realistic, I’m quite content to stick to my alarm clock radios.

The Pure-Fi Dream is a stylish clock radio that also functions as an iPod and iPhone-compatible music system. Created by Logitech as a premium product in their Pure-Fi line, this is a good looking model that you can realistically take into your bedroom.

BRICK-LIKE: The power supply is as heavy as it is chunky. Say goodbye to any dreams of hoisting around the Pure-Fi Dream on the shoulder like a boombox.

This isn’t a HiFi

The Pure-Fi dream is a sweet little sound system to have around, but keep in mind that it’s designed to sit on your bedside table.

If you’re planning to have a party, don’t expect the Pure-Fi dream to have the best sound quality to entertain your guests. Unless you plan to entertain your guests in your bedroom. In which case, I don’t want to know.

The speakers lack the power to fully drive the bass, so audiophiles will be disappointed. But then, any audio enthusiast would point out that this isn’t supposed to be a HiFi sound system to begin with.

The price, on the other hand, is a nightmare. The Logitech Pure-Fi Dream mixes style and functionality quite well, although the acoustics might leave some wanting.

Honestly though, these shortcomings could have been forgiven if it weren’t for the product’s crazy price tag.

At RM1,139, this is a pretty expensive Dream to have. I might just save up for that supermodel instead.

Pros: Innovative features; cool orange-and-black design; decent sound quality (if you’re not an audiophile).

Cons: LCD screen too small; sound quality could have been better (if you’re an audio enthusiast); pricey
