LG Mobile – User-friendliness sets this slider apart

LG Mobile, LG’s latest offering for those with speedy thumbs and a penchant for chatting and messaging comes in the form of the KS360, also known as LG Q – a slider EDGE-enabled model.

With its formfactor featuring a well-spaced bubble wrap-like Qwerty keyboard, this model comes across more casual than other Qwerty-clad devices in the market. Upon inserting a SIM card, the model’s design proved to be quite user-friendly and its interface is also intuitive. When the keyboard is slid out, the display immediately switches to landscape mode.

The touch-screen function on the 2.4-inch display works only when the keyboard is tucked in. The phone comes with a dedicated touch dialling activation button to launch the soft keypad on the screen.  On one side, there are the microSD card slot and USB/headset slot which come with a protective lid, while on the other side resides the camera and zoom/volume buttons.

On the Menu page, each main icon is labelled with a number. For example, Call History is tagged with No. 2 while Profiles has No. 7. This number allocation comes in handy whenever you are accessing the Menu in Landscape mode using the Qwerty keypad.

The wireless application protocol (WAP) browser comes with a Yahoo! shortcuts, which includes Yahoo!oneSearch, Yahoo!Mail, Yahoo!Messenger and Yahoo!Address Book.  Otherwise, users can store their favourite links on Bookmarks or simply choose the option to enter the URL to access their favourite Web site.

As for multimedia handling, the KS360 is equipped with an MP3 player, camera, video camera, FM radio and voice recorder. The MP3 player has a lot of equaliser settings, including 3-D, which emulates a surround sound feel.

The built-in speaker gives out satisfactory audio output. When set to maximum level, this small device can get quite loud.  Meanwhile, the two-megapixel camera can record still shots at up to 1,600 by 1,200 pixels in Super Fine quality. But if you’re going to capture stills in high-res mode most of the time, invest in a microSD card for that extra storage. The model’s microSD card slot can take cards up to four gigabytes.

For video recording, the best resolution you can record in is 320 by 240 pixels in Super Fine quality. For better results in both still and video shooting, there are controls for zoom, white balance, exposure and colour effect.

Pictures, videos, sound recordings and other files can be transferred from the phone’s My Stuff folder to a PC using the USB connection.  Similar to attaching a thumb drive, the phone will be recognised by a Windows-based systems as a USB mass storage. Other ways to send files to other devices would be through Bluetooth or MMS, and the phone’s smart interface allows quick sending of files using all these methods.

To manage your contacts, the KS360’s Contact folder accommodates speed dials, contact grouping, Picture ID, user business card and copying or deleting contacts from SIM card to phone memory and vice-versa. Other personal information management (PIM) tools include Calendar, Memo, Alarm Clock, Calculator, Stopwatch, Unit converter, world clock and SIM services.

Games preloaded into the review unit such as Extreme Skateboard and Sudoku Cafe are enough to keep you occupied for a short time, but more Java-based titles and applications can be downloaded over-the-air.

The KS360’s interface also supports multiple languages. Other notable features include security features such as phone lock and anti-theft mobile tracker, Flight mode and power save option.
