Zurich as ‘yes we can’ outsiders in Group C

ZURICH (AFP) – Zurich‘s shock defeat of AC Milan in the Champions League has thrust the Swiss team into the unlikely role of “yes we can” outsiders against the Italian champions, Real Madrid and Marseille in Group C.

Zurich stand second with three points, ahead of Milan on goal difference and of twice-defeated Marseille ahead of their tie against the French team on Wednesday.

“If we can win here, we can win anywhere,” defender Alain Rochat said after the victory at Milan’s San Siro stadium.

But Zurich coach Bernard Challandes is acutely aware that his side’s jubilation is based on little more than a single match against the ailing Milanese and a goal snatched with a cheeky heeled flick by Finnish defender Hannu Tihinen.

Challandes doesn’t mention the moment they were overwhelmed 5-2 at home by Real Madrid in their first Group C tie, but he does not want to dampen his side’s new found European confidence either.

The then unfancied Swiss managed to string together a 20 minute period just after half-time when they scared the galacticos by pulling two goals back to 3-2.

“We had self-confidence after the game against Madrid, we thought ‘yes we can do’ something in the Champions League,” midfielder Xavier Margairaz said.

But Challandes underlines the fact that the reigning Swiss champions are half way down their domestic league, one of Europe’s weakest, and 16 points adrift of the leaders.

“We’ve had some bad experiences recently, that means everything for the Champions League, not enough for the Swiss championship,” commented Challandes, as the team lined up for a cup tie against Locarno, who are languishing in the bottom third of the Swiss second division.

“When a player plays badly against Locarno then he might not have a chance against Marseille either,” he remarked.

Zurich thrashed Locarno 7-0 on Saturday, with two goals from striker Alexandre Alphonse, but only after a goal-less first half that illustrated one of their problems this season and a talking to from Challandes at half time.

Zurich, who have traditionally been in the shadows of their better known cross-town rivals Grasshopper as well as Basel in recent decades, have won three of the last four Swiss league titles.

They owe the first two to coach Lucien Favre before he left for Hertha Berlin in 2007.

The down-to-earth Challandes, a successful former Swiss national under-21 team coach, has since crafted his side around Margairaz in midfield.

Winger Johannn Vonlanthen, who is fighting for a steady place in Switzerland’s national side, is top scorer with six league goals this season.

“We have one dream, we must do everything that we can to reach this second place, or third place,” in the Champions League, said Margairaz.

Man City too good for Liverpool

Man City too good for Liverpool

Manchester City recovered from their shock defeat at Sunderland and opened up a three-point gap at the top of the Premier League table with a comfortable victory over Liverpool.
Roberto Mancini’s side faced a test of character and resilience with a swift turnaround to play again only 48 hours after the loss at the Stadium of Light – and they passed the examination impressively.
Liverpool were denied striker Luis Suarez’s potency as they decided not to appeal against the eight-game ban handed down after the Football Association found the Uruguayan guilty of racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra. And they sorely missed Suarez’s menace as they enjoyed plenty of possession but never threatened to turn it into tangible reward.
Mancini incredulous at Man City fixtures
Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina’s error gifted Sergio Aguero an early goal and Yaya Toure rose to head home David Silva’s corner for a second before the break.
The only blot on City’s night came when Gareth Barry was sent off for a second yellow card, which means he misses Sunday’s FA Cup third round tie against Manchester United, but they sealed the win when James Milner scored from the spot after Martin Skrtel fouled Yaya Toure.

It gave City the advantage over closest rivals United before their visit to Newcastle on Wednesday and enabled them to regain momentum after a goalless draw at West Bromwich Albion and the 1-0 reverse at Sunderland.

Liverpool’s efforts lacked punch despite the vast expense lavished on their forward line by manager Kenny Dalglish and they ended well beaten.

Stewart Downing was thwarted by Joe Hart’s crucial early block from Jordan Henderson’s fine pass before Reina gifted City their opening goal.Aguero’s shot was testing in the stormy conditions but the Spaniard made the basic error of failing to get his body behind the ball and the 20-yard shot dipped underneath him to relieve City’s early nerves.

The Argentine then lifted a shot just over before Edin Dzeko’s effort took a heavy deflection off Glen Johnson and flew inches wide with the anxious Reina totally wrong-footed.

As Liverpool appeared to be getting a foothold in proceedings, the hosts struck again 12 minutes before the interval.

Reina made amends for his earlier error by turning Vincent Kompany’s header over the top, but when Silva returned the resulting corner Yaya Toure got ahead of Johnson to head high past the the visiting keeper.

Kompany made a vital intervention at the other end to ensure City protected their two-goal lead until half-time, throwing himself bravely in front of Dirk Kuyt’s shot as the Dutchman moved to turn in Andy Carroll’s header.Once more the Reds saw plenty of the ball after the restart, but their lack of threat prompted Dalglish to make a double change just before the hour mark, sending on Steven Gerrard and former Manchester City striker Craig Bellamy for the disappointing Charlie Adam and Kuyt.

They failed to make any serious inroads into the home defence, although they were given brief hope when Barry was sent off for a second yellow card, an innocuous block on Daniel Agger, with 17 minutes left.
If they did have any hopes of a revival, they were snuffed out two minutes later when referee Mike Jones – a late replacement for Andre Marriner, who refereed the match in which Suarez had his flashpoint with Evra in October – pointed to the spot after Skrtel tangled with Yaya Toure.

After Mancini had failed in demands to have Skrtel sent off by waving an imaginary red card, Milner converted the penalty emphatically.
Substitute Adam Johnson struck the post with a curling effort as City pressed again, but matters had already been settled well before.
Liverpool kept going and tested City keeper Hart with some late efforts from Gerrard and Downing, but he was more than equal to the task on a bitterly disappointing night for Dalglish’s side.

Honours even as Bayern held by Juventus

Honours even as Bayern held by Juventus

MUNICH (AFP) – Bayern Munich were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Group A rivals Juventus on Wednesday, which left the frustrated German giants sharing the top of the table with group rivals Bordeaux.

Bayern created a string of chances in the first half and ended the game with 14 shots on target compared to the Italians’ seven, but Louis van Gaal’s side failed to break the Juventus defence.

“We did not win and it’s not every week that we can say: ‘We could have won’ – simple as that,” said van Gaal bluntly, while praising striker Miroslav Klose for a “very good performance”.

“We have to score goals to win and we created so many chances to win, so it is a pity we didn’t get a result and we are very disappointed.

“But if we continue to play in such a way, it is only a question of time before the results go our way.”

With Maccabi Haifa losing 1-0 at Bordeaux, Bayern stay top of the table only by virtue of a superior goal difference compared to the French champions, who they will meet in the next round of matches.

Van Gaal opted to start Germany star Miroslav Klose as the lone striker with Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery – dubbed ‘Robbery’ by the German media – on the wings in a 4-3-3 formation.

In defence, 20-year-old Holger Badstuber partnered Belgium’s Daniel van Buyten at centre-back with Germany’s Philipp Lahm and Holland’s Edson Braafheid on the flanks.

Juventus coach Ciro Ferrara opted for his customary 4-4-2 with France’s David Trezeguet partnering Italian World Cup winner Vincenzo Iaquinta up front.

The sides had experienced mixed fortunes in their opening games, with Bayern winning 3-0 at Maccabi while Juve drew 1-1 at home to Bordeaux.

The Germans threatened in the opening minutes when 20-year-old midfielder Thomas Mueller fired across the face of the goal, but his effort went wide, while Trezeguet picked up an early card.

Brazil’s ex-Werder Bremen midfielder Diego then fired straight at Bayern goalkeeper Hans-Joerg Butt on 18 minutes, but seconds later Ribery beat two defenders only to float his shot over both goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and the crossbar.

Just before the half-hour mark, Mueller broke through and went one-on-one with Buffon, but tried to play Robben into space and wasted the chance, with Klose heading over from the resulting corner.

Juve’s Mauro Camoranesi then fired wide of the post while seconds later both Mueller, Klose and Schweinsteiger all had chances against Buffon.

Ribery was sent tumbling to the turf on several occasions by robust Juventus marking and referee Howard Webb finally lost his patience when he showed Camoranesi a yellow card on 36 minutes.

Just before the half-time whistle Robben limped out of the game with an injury to his right leg, Ivica Olic replacing him.

The game went flat in the second-half as Juventus playmaker Diego went off and van Gaal brought on Germany striker Mario Gomez to spruce up Munich’s attack.

Iaquinta had arguably the best chance of the game to put the guests ahead when he mistimed his shot on 65 minutes and slammed his fist into the turf in frustration – it was one of those nights.
