Tevez joins Man City, criticises Ferguson

Tevez joins Man City, criticises Ferguson

MANCHESTER, England – Argentina striker Carlos Tevez signed for Manchester City on Tuesday and used his first news conference at the big-spending Premier League club to criticise Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson.

The 25-year-old, who spent two years at Old Trafford under a lease agreement, said Ferguson had not done enough to persuade him to stay at the champions.

City paid a reported 25.5 million pounds for Tevez whose “economic rights” were owned by agent Kia Joorabchian.

“Alex never called me or sent me any text messages,” Tevez, who signed a five-year contract, said. “The only time he spoke to me was after the match against Roma because we had to discuss me playing for Argentina.

“I don’t think that is the way to treat a player who has been two years at the club.”

Ferguson said on Monday that he had personally tried to contact Tevez in January about extending his stay at United but that the striker had ignored his calls.

Tevez was the third major pre-season signing for City who are owned by Abu Dhabi billionaire Sheikh Mansour after midfielder Gareth Barry and striker Roque Santa Cruz.

City manager Mark Hughes confirmed that the club had also opened talks with Arsenal about buying Togo striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

“There’s been contact and there is a deal to be done possibly but it’s not been concluded as we speak here,” Hughes said.

Tevez was a firm favourite at Old Trafford, scoring 34 goals in 98 appearances but often had to make do with a place on the bench. He was among the substitutes for the Champions League final defeat by Barcelona in May.

He said City’s potential was a major factor in him moving across the city.

“Both the technical department and the ownership came with a very good proposal for me and this showed that they have the ambition to become one of the biggest clubs in the world,” he said.

“Money was not a factor for me.”

With Paraguay international Santa Cruz and possibly Adebayor in the squad next season, Tevez may have to fight for his place.

“In every team you have to win the respect of your team mates and sweat the shirt,” he said. “I would not be happy if I was assured a first-team place.”

City have been linked with Chelsea captain John Terry but Hughes would not be drawn on the speculation surrounding the England defender.

“I have fantastic respect for John Terry, as a great player and as an outstanding captain. But he is a Chelsea player at this moment in time so we have to respect that,” he said.

Juve to treat Haifa like Real, says Chiellini

Juve to treat Haifa like Real, says Chiellini

ROME (AFP) – Juventus will not be underestimating group minnows Maccabi Haifa when the Israelis come to Turin in the Champions League on Wednesday.

Maccabi sit bottom of Group A after two defeats to Bayern Munich and Bordeaux while Juve are only one place and two points above them after having drawn against the same two teams.

But despite Haifa’s limited European pedigree, Juve centre-back Giorgio Chiellini insisted his team will treat their opponents like the greats of European football.

Last year Juve beat Real Madrid home and away in the group stages before they fell to Chelsea in the first knock-out round.

“On Wednesday we have to play with the same intensity we showed a year ago against Real,” said Chiellini.

“In this match and in the next one in Tel Aviv (Haifa’s ground does not meet UEFA standards so they play Champions League matches in Tel Aviv’s national stadium) are matches we have to win at any cost so we can make it to the last two group games in the best possible health.

“We don’t know much about Maccabi, personally I know the striker (Vladimir) Dvalishvili because I came up against him for the national team against Georgia last month.

“They’re a team that must be respected for what they did against Bayern Munich and Bordeaux when they were only beaten at the end of the games.”

Juve’s overriding problem on Wednesday might not be Maccabi but themselves.

After a great start to the season in which they won their first four Serie A matches, including successive away wins at AS Roma and Lazio, they have not won in five matches (four in Serie A and one in the Champions League).

In fact they have only one win in seven matches in all competitions and that came at home to rock-bottom Livorno and thanks to a man-of-the-match performance from goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon.

That is hardly the form of potential champions, either of Italy or of Europe.

However, it is a remarkably similar situation to that faced by Juve a year ago when Real were the visitors to Turin at the same stage of the competition.

Back then, as now, they had not won in five matches only their situation was worse as they had lost two of those five — instead of just one this time — and were struggling in the league with only nine points and two wins from seven games.

This time they are third in the table and only four points behind leaders and champions Inter Milan.

“Then we were also in a delicate period. In the league things were going worse because we had already lost twice and we were lower in the table,” added Chiellini.

“On top of that we had a crisis due to many injuries. The win against Real Madrid represented a reawakening for us and after that we went on a winning run that put us back in the title picture.

“It needs to be the same this time around.”

The importance of this match for Juve’s season cannot be understated as they risk falling into a dangerous spiral.

Confidence is low and their results have been a fair reflection of their play.

They were fortunate to earn a draw against Bordeaux in the Champions League while their only defeat in this sequence, against Palermo, saw them dominated.

Liverpool decide against Suarez appeal in race abuse ban

Liverpool will not be appealing the eight-game ban for their Uruguay international striker Luis Suarez, the English Premier League club said Tuesday.

Suarez received the suspension and a $62,000 fine for racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra in a match in October.
Their decision follows the weekend release by the English Football Association (FA) of the findings of its Independent Regulatory Commission.
A detailed 115-page report concluded that Suarez’s evidence was “unreliable” and “inconsistent”, revealing that he had called Evra a “negro” no fewer than seven times in a heated exchange.
Liverpool continued to defend Suarez in a lengthy statement on its official website, claiming the FA had constructed a “highly subjective” case against him, which was “ultimately unsubstantiated.”

Suarez, who joined Liverpool from Dutch side Ajax last season, also protested his innocence in a statement.

“Never, I repeat, never, have I had any racial problem with a team mate or individual who was of a different race or color to mine. Never,” it read.He added: “In my country, ‘negro’ is a word we use commonly, a word which doesn’t show any lack of respect and is even less so a form of racist abuse. Based on this, everything which has been said so far is totally false.”

Suarez’s ban will begin immediately, meaning he will miss Tuesday night’s clash against EPL leaders Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.

“I do feel sorry for the fans and for my team mates whom I will not be able to help during the next month. It will be a very difficult time for me,” he said.
Liverpool manager Kenny Dalglish and his players wore Suarez t-shirts in the warm-up before their match
against Wigan last month, but ultimately the club decided not to prolong the affair.
FA: Suarez evidence ‘unreliable’
“It is time to put the Luis Suarez matter to rest and for all of us, going forward, to work together to stamp out racism in every form both inside and outside the sport,” the statement said.
His absence from the Liverpool line-up will be keenly felt during a critical period as they chase a Champions League place.
Suarez will also miss their League Cup semifinal tie against Manchester City as Dalglish bids to win his first silverware since taking charge last season.
